Should we write website content for humans or for search engines?
October 9, 2009Search Engine Optimization or also known as SEO is now something that many webmasters, developers, bloggers are now obsessing over. There are tons of website/ blog owners spending countless time tweaking their own sites, building links, creating quality content to achieve high ranking on different search engines. According to statistics, there are over 90% of web surfers use search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing to visit websites on a regular basis, but does it mean that web masters should build and tweak sites for SEO, or for humans as their visitors?
The answer is simple, when we build website, we do not create it for the benefit of search engine crawlers instead we target people who will read and visit that site. Hence, as webmasters, we should build a website for human beings and definitely not for search engines only. The whole purpose of creating a web site is so that you can get traffic. Without human visitors,a website is next to useless. No matter how many valuable features and how functional your site is, without people looking for it, your design and functionality becomes worthless.Although SE can deliver traffic, web sites that are designed for search engines, are often not designed for human visitors and all the traffic that your web site gets will be worthless. Trust is also important to obtain from your visitors. If youachieve great trust from your human visitors, they will keep coming back on your site. Return visit plays a vital role for the success of any web site.
Hence, when creating articles for web site, it should be built for human visitors. If you have articles that are too keyword dense, the quality of the writing will not be as high as it should, and quite frankly, many of your visitors will be annoyed if you keep using words such as “mesothelioma” or “loans” to get your web site high in the search rankings for these terms. They will leave your web site and most likely not return. If you create a web site where content is valuable for people to read and is well written, chances are you will increase return visits percentage who like the quality of your posts and come back frequently to read any new content you may have added. The more people that subscribe and link to your web site, the more popular it well become and naturally, it will be ranked higher in search engines.
To add up, instead of wasting tons of time for building irrelevant links for your site, I suggest to better spent it for adding features which would prompt more people to stay in your site for a longer time, in that way, it would help your site to achieve good bounce rate percentage.
In conclusion, I believe we should write for people because we want people to be interested in our content. If i write for search engine crawlers only I’ll rank fine and people will easily find my site. Though, they’ll leave it as soon as possible when they see inappropriate content. So I prefer having less people on my site but these people will be satisfied with the design they see, services they can get and articles they can read.
